When it comes to getting married, choosing where to hold the ceremony is one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make, behind your choice of bride or groom of course. Not only do you need to think about the type of venue you go with (hall, church, country house, cathedral, etc.) but the location you choose can play an important role too – particularly when it comes to the weather.
Luckily, if you live in Europe you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to locations, whether you want to stay in your own country or elope and get married on some sun-drenched beach in a foreign climate. So to help out, here are three of our favourite countries when it comes to getting hitched:
You might not think of the UK as a first-choice when it comes to getting married in the sun, but Britain boasts some of Europe’s most historic and beautiful locations, as well as some of the most stunning venues you’ll find anywhere in the world. Whether you want a quaint village church, an imposing cathedral or your own private castle for the day, you’ll find it in Great Britain.
So wide is the choice of stunning locations that Britain is one of the most regularly chosen destinations for films and TV shows, from the castles of Harry Potter to the backdrops of iconic television series like Downton Abbey. If this is more your cup of tea, you’ll be pleased to know that many of these world-famous buildings are available as wedding venues.
Probably my favourite destination in all of Europe, France is a great choice if you’re looking for a memorable and beautiful place to get married. The country has so much to offer that you can basically pick exactly what you want and find it in France. Whether you’re looking for sun-drenched beaches, historic castles, exotic-feeling islands, rural retreats or busting cosmopolitan cities, France has something to offer. Not only that, but wherever you choose you’ll be able to top it all off with some of the best wine and food you’ll find anywhere in the world, let alone in Europe.
So versatile is France as a wedding destination, we’d recommend looking through a French travel guide before truly making your mind up, as you’d be amazed just how much this beautiful country has to offer.
Speaking of stunning locations, if you’re happy to travel a little bit further you could opt to get married in Italy, one of the most picturesque, culturally rich and sunny countries in Europe. It’s comparable to France in terms of the sheer variety of locations you have on offer, but I’d particularly recommend a lakeside wedding if you’re going to opt to say your vows in the country, as it boasts some of the most awe-inspiring lakes and surrounding areas you’ll find anywhere in the world.
